What does infochimps.org do?

From historical stock prices to the trajectory of every baseball pitch, we’re putting together the world’s largest open data repository. Infochimps.org’s mission is to increase the world’s access to data.

Goodside of this service:

  • A whole lot of data available at one place.
  • Sell your precious data.
  • Share your data.
  • Get free data for your work or experiments.
  • Beta testing services on data is available.

Downside of this service:

  • Selling data and bidding is still a challenge
  • Data can also be intellectual property, and licencing is a major concern, is creative licenses enough?
  • Edit data is still not available
  • Will data updates be available, say like in the next three years I will have an updated version of the data which I already uploaded, should this be a new data or a old data update. What if the old data was sold?
  • Not clear information is provided on data selling.
  • Non-user friendly data download options.

Features offered by Infochimps:

  • Infochimps’ datasets are protected by licenses, set by the users who upload them, so you can understand the rights you have to the data you download.
  • To use data, you have to trust it. Infochimps’ datasets are linked to sources so you can understand where your data came from.
  • Infochimps’ datasets can have multiple downloads, each in a different format (Excel, CSV, YAML, etc.). Infochimps will package all data for a download into a single archive file in your choice of format (either Zip or tarball).
  • All available downloads were created by Infochimps users just like you. Users can sell datasets at a price they choose or they can decide to share them for free.
  • You will be able to download the data over and over again, anytime you want.
  • Once you’ve purchased and started the download, you’ll have 24 hours to complete it. To download the data after this time you’ll need to purchase it again.
