Ways to measure research

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Although young computer scientists are told that they need to produce research results, no exact requirements are specified. Its true? The ask is simple, Are you a researcher? Then research!

Some measures which we find applicable include:

Right problem: Picking the right problem is very crucial these days either to get good credibility or good research grant.

Innovation: Yes, novel techniques lead to higher degree of credibility.

Creative: The approach to research and conclude in a creative manner should be considered to measure research unlike a mundane effort.

Constant Monitoring, evaluating and Reporting/Communication: This simply means enough number of publications.

Goal Plan: Whether the research has tangible goals and milestones.

“United States Gross National Happiness” by Facebook

Friday, October 9th, 2009

We recently talked about Facebook and social network based data mining leading to increased personal data exploits. Now facebook comes up with a new app to track overall happiness, in short words, how we are doing?

Facebook now tracks its users happiness,  with a Gross National Happiness (GNH) index.

The graph contains several metrics. The first, GNH represents our measure of Gross National Happiness. The other two, Positivity and Negativity, represent the two components of GNH: The extent to which words used on that day were positive and negative. Gross National Happiness is the difference between the positivity and negativity scores, though they are interesting to view on their own.

Ask: Will this app expand out of US to other countries?

Twitter and Data mining

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Recently we did look at twitter and its growth in our Twitter lists related post. Twitter’s back in the news, and this time its because of its interest to explore a possibility of data mining its data. According to WSJ, twitter is separately talking with Software Giants, Microsoft and Google.

Sources said a number of scenarios are being discussed to compensate Twitter for its  valuable trove of real-time and content-sharing information, generated from the data stream of billions of tweets from its 54 million monthly users.

The deals, stressed sources close to the situation, are nonexclusive, especially because Twitter’s management is keen to remain independent and also nonpartisan in the growing search battle between Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT).

Datamining Tutorial Days coming soon in November 2009

Friday, October 9th, 2009

“The increasing use of computer technology in many areas of economic, scientific and social life is resulting in collections of digital data. These data pools could be used to obtain a higher quality of information than that obtained from simple database inquiries. This is where Data Mining comes in.

With Data Mining techniques, it is possible to “mine” data pools for “hidden” knowledge. Data mining gives you a major competitive advantage in view of the key role played by knowledge and knowledge management in the development of future markets. So why not join us on the route from simple data archiving to automatic knowledge extraction!” – http://www.data-mining-tutorial.de
